When the HPV (Human Papillomavirus Vaccine) first came out, we did not offer it. We talked about it, researched it and decided to hold on recommending the vaccine until more studies were out. Later, we offered it to our older patients, the ones headed for college. Now…we want everyone to get the vaccine series. Why?

Several reasons:2427684_2168747_GARDASIL-9-Package-and-Vial

  1. It’s been available for more than a decade and we have safety studies proving that is is a safe vaccine.
  2. Over 30,000 Americans will get cancers related to their HPV infection. Cancers of the cervix, anus, vagina, penis, throat. Those cancers can be disfiguring, cause problems swallowing and speaking. The vaccine provides close to 100% protection. As a comparison, seat belts reduce your risk of injury and death by 50%.
  3. HPV is almost always from sex…but it can be contracted from kissing. Do you remember when you had your first kiss? Let’s vaccinate early.

So, what are you waiting for?
