The middle years are a time when children discover who they are. Their self-esteem is still developing and they are learning how to fit into different peer groups. Eating, exercise and work habits of this age can influence health and success later in life. Children are going out in the world and they learn that other adults (teachers, coaches and neighbors) may not relate to them in the same manner as their parents. To succeed they have to learn to anticipate other's expectations of them. Parent, however, are still the most important role model that a child can have. They should watch their own language and behavior at all times. Additionally, parents should talk often with their children to help them navigate through the world.
